Theme Thursday: “Summer”

shore

Rogue

Ice-blooded, she birthed it

somewhere, in the vast Atlantic,

flint-finned, silent, steady;

it came a-calling in the Summer of ‘16.

Swept up by the Gulf Stream

to Jersey’s shore, where hordes had

learned to love a leisurely swim

in the open sea — it came.

Beyond the boardwalk

at ‘Lantic City, Beach Haven,

Spring Lake, Raritan–

(vacation spots to die for)

They came to dip their toes

in the chill of the tides

and race back to shore,

shrieking with delight.

All was right, with the

sun-blessed beaches,

the gentle breezes that

swept the water’s sparkle,

But a man with his dog

on this joyful, spree-filled day

would be torn with 50 teeth

and his life’s blood drained away.

None to save him and none

to save those who would fall prey

to the driven one ; blood, only blood

to sate the tiger of the sea.

Five more would bleed

No man, no woman, no child

safe – even in the calmest creek–

the strikes would land and kill,

Until, a big-game hunter

with ice-veins of his own

would net the Great White

and beat it with a broken oar.

  1. Kat,I love this. Its a well written poem but it also made me smile because my best friend is terrified of sharks, like to the point of she cant stand to see the word written for fear the letters will bite her lol! Thanks for your comment and stalking 🙂 That was my writing and thoughts blog. I have one that I have set up for my dolls and general art (http://madgypsystudio.blogspot.com)and then one for my “less appropriate” erotica art (http://madgypsyX.blogspot.com though I'm still in the process of setting that one up) Feel free to subscribe to as much or as little of me as you want. I know there's only so much I can take of myself lol.Cheers to a new friend :)~Mad Gypsy

  4. I so believe in your genius, Kat. Are you going to put a book together? I think some of your readers might buy one. I would – something featuring your best stuff. Maybe you coudl do an e Book??? I bought one recently for $58!! Peeps are making money on this stuff – not that money is the aim for a poet, just sayin'

  6. HI FOLKS! THIS MORNING I HAVE A DENTIST APPOINTMENT (NOT LOOKING FORWARD TO IT – NOT BECAUSE OF THE PROCEDURE, BUT RATHER BECAUSE WE HAVE BAD STORMS PREDICTED TODAY AND I'M A BIT NERVOUS ABOUT HAVING METAL OBJECTS IN MY MOUTH WHEN LIGHTNING IS FLASHING OUTSIDE – REALLY!) IF THE STORMS PERSIST (AS PREDICTED) I WON'T BE ON MY LAPTOP UNTIL MUCH LATER, SO I APOLOGIZE IF I DON'T GET TO COMMENT ON THE THEME THURSDAY POSTS STRAIGHT AWAY.I'LL BE THERE SOON!KAT

  7. Heh, heh! Are you looking to be the Spielberg of the poetry world, Kat? He emptied the beaches the Summer that Jaws came out; you may succeed in doing that this Summer. Although our beaches aren't all that crowded here in New England, what with us getting sun only one day in every 8 or so.

  8. Kat,You had me from “Ice-blooded”…. I got goose-bumps as I read….very sad and scary.I've never watched “Jaws” and after reading your poem, I probably never will. 😉

  9. This is why I haven't been swimming in the ocean since Jaws came out and since that same year I saw a real big shark in the ocean, you are not catching me swimming in their home. My bathtub is just fine. Or a nice pool where I can see to the bottom and know what is in there with me. Yup, I am staying away from the sharks. They scare me. Yes they do.God bless.

  10. Lovely narrative poem. I always think of us when I think of sharks, I forget that they're just about everywhere. The thing about sharks is they only bite once or twice. They just don't know their power. I don't think we taste very good! And I do get the shits when there's an attack and everyone hits the ocean with a spear gun . .it's what they do . .they're the cleaners of the sea.

  11. Thanks…lol…I have been having some anxiety swimming in the warm Florida waters, lately. Now, this is going to be replaying in my head, while the Jaws theme playing in the background. Tuh-rhun…tuh-rhun…AHHHH!All kidding aside, wonderfully written poem.

  12. I'll raise my hand to buy your book, Kat. That would be awesome. For now, I'm loving the reading here. Excellent poem! That opening stanza hooked me big time with: “flint-finned, silent, steady;it came a-calling in the Summer of ‘16.” Fantastic! You are a great storyteller. It kept me on the edge of my seat. Now I have to look it up, too. I'm lucky enough to live close to the beach now for good day trips, so I'll surely remember this poem!
