A chipping sparrow
Struck my window, breaking its
Wee neck, and my heart.

Update:
I had carefully placed the sparrow in a branch of the Christmas tree I have on my deck. Its head appeared to be leaning to the right. I left it there in a sheltered spot to die peacefully. I watched and it was very still. I planned on picking it up later to lay it down underneath the cedars at the bottom of my garden.
Wonder of wonders! Thirty minutes had passed and my husband called out to me, it’s gone! He had seen it drop down from the tree and fly away. My heart is unbroken.
This has happened with me twice in the last two years – both robins and both died in my hands. As you say, heart-breaking. Nice to see you here. It is good to see Arsenal doing well these days. I miss your posts and poetry. S

Thanks Scooj, that’s lovely of you to say.
Incredibly, the bird did survive. I’ll need to write a follow up.
